AGCCO does not clean asbestos roofs or gutters affected by asbestos roof contamination. The gutter itself does not have to be made from asbestos. Weathered asbestos-cement roof sheets can release material that collects with leaves and soil in an ordinary metal gutter.
This distinction is important when requesting a quote. Describing the gutter as metal does not rule out contamination from the roof above it.
Expert insight from Dylan Howell, Director of Australian Gutter Cleaning Co., with 15 years in roofing and eight years in gutter cleaning. Updated 28 October 2026.
The roofing can be the source
South Australian government guidance warns that asbestos fibres may collect in gutters beneath asbestos roofing after rain. The condition of the roof and the material collected below it need specialist consideration.
Dylan reports that gutter debris samples he has had tested from asbestos-roof properties have returned positive results. That experience informs AGCCO's decision not to treat these gutters as ordinary cleaning jobs. It does not mean a photograph alone can confirm whether another property's debris contains asbestos.
Why we do not use the standard cleaning process
Our usual gutter cleaning service uses industrial vacuum equipment and air-flushing of accessible downpipes. That standard service is not offered for suspected asbestos contamination.
Suspected contaminated debris needs an appropriately qualified specialist to assess the material, work method and disposal requirements. It should not be treated as ordinary garden waste or included in a routine gutter-cleaning booking.
Please tell us about known or suspected asbestos roofing before any work is arranged. If it is identified during an assessment, we will explain that the affected work falls outside our cleaning service.
Who should assess the work?
Seek advice from a licensed asbestos assessor or an appropriately licensed asbestos removalist. SafeWork SA distinguishes asbestos assessor licences from removal licences; they authorise different work.
A Class A removal licence permits removal of friable asbestos, non-friable asbestos and asbestos-contaminated dust or debris. Class B permissions are narrower. The appropriate licence and controls depend on the material and the work, so they need to be established for the specific job.
AGCCO's service position is straightforward: asbestos roof and contaminated-gutter cleaning is not work we undertake. An assessor qualification should not be read as an offer to perform asbestos removal.
What to do when requesting a gutter quote
Provide your full property address and mention any existing asbestos report or known asbestos roof sheets. You do not need to collect a sample or climb onto the roof for an ordinary quote enquiry.
If the roofing material is uncertain, specialist advice can establish the next step. A roof's age, colour or appearance alone is not a laboratory result.
For non-asbestos properties, our routine service includes gutter debris removal, attention to accessible above-ground downpipes, before-and-after photos and a roof and gutter report.
